3D Penguin Assembly Tutorial

This perky little fellow will take the chill off any winter day!
Follow the tutorial steps here and see how easily
and quickly he goes together.
Before you know it, you'll have a platoon of penguins
greeting you from a mantle or shelf.

Step 1. Identify the cut pieces that you will need.
A. right side front body, and left side front body
B. center right front body and center left front body
C. center front right and left tummy accent pieces
D. eye pupils piece
E. eye whites piece
F. beak piece
G. back body pieces (interchangeable positions)

Step 2. Complete the face assembly.

Bend each side half downward slightly at perforation.
Bend the tabs as shown:
center two upward,
side two downward.

Attach the pupils, centered, on the eye whites.

Align the base edge of the eye whites assembly
with the back edge of the beak. Make sure it is centered,
then apply glue and attach the tabs to the eye whites back side.

Step 3. Identify the tummy accent pieces with their
corresponding center front right or left body piece.
(These instructions will indicate the PENGUIN's left or right).
NOTE that the  wide half of the tummy piece should align
under the tab.
Fold each of the pieces as "valley" folds (right sides together),

Step 4. Prepare to fold and assemble the body pieces.
This diagram shows an overhead view of how
the identified body pieces will be placed.
Fold edges will meet at the center.
As you look at this graphic, the 'A' body piece
that is on the left half of the circle will be
the RIGHT A side front body piece,
and the 'A' body piece that is on the right half of the circle
will be the LEFT A side front body piece.
This reversal holds true for the B center front body pieces.

Step 5. Fold each of the front (A & B) body pieces as "valley" folds,
then organize them according to the graphic in Step 4.
Apply glue to the back side surfaces
that will come together, as shown here.
NOTE that the two tab edges are between the "plain" center layers,
and the arms are each un-layered at each side.

Step 6. Position and glue the tummy accent pieces in place
as they were arranged in Step 3.

Step 7. Fold, arrange and glue the aligning surfaces
of the 4 G back body pieces.

Step 8. Position the face assembly at the center of
the front head area. NOTE how the side tabs of the beak
will rest on the side tabs of the B body pieces.

Fold the beak side tabs into place and glue to body tabs.

This is how your finished assembly should look.
The final touch is to dress him in his neck scarf.
We used a bit of red ribbon.
If you have yarn, a few strand
of that will work. Or braid three strands,
knot off, and wrap around his neck.
(Surprised at how easy that was?)

3D Rose & Tulip Tutorial

The Rose and Tulip have a lot of similarities.   Start with the largest petal ring first and insert the tabs into the  hole on the adjacent petal forming a bowl.

This picture shows the different sets of petals for the rose.

The piece above is the stem.  Form it by rolling the rectangle part shown on the right up above.    The goal here is to form a tight roll so you may have to roll it a few times.  The long thin part to the left is kept straight.

Once rolled tightly.  Check the hole on the petals  to make sure that the stem fits into the hole.  Once rolled glue in place.

Fold the long piece along the dotted lines.

Form a tri-fold which will be the top part of the stem and hold the petals down.

Insert stem through the smallest petals.  Ensure the tri-fold is on the inside.

Insert other petals onto the stem from smallest to largest.

Form base cone, by curling it then gluing the edge that overlaps.  Be sure to  the gap at the tip of the cone to insert the  stem.

Slide base onto the stem and press up against the petals.

Add leaves by gluing the base of the leave onto the stem.   Once attached fold down.

Luck o' the Irish! Tuts and Inspiration

Oh do I ever love St. Patrick's day. There is something just so rich about all those different shades of green that make up the holiday. And with a last name of Daley, or as we like to say it this time of year "O'Daley", ya gotta love it!
I've posted in the past about the fun traditions that were passed on from my husbands family in regards to the green holiday, but of coarse, my wonderful mom has captured the magic of it in her most recent post on her blog. Every year, the little feet suddenly appear on our walls and all through the house. Here is the link if you'd like to cut your own sets of little green feet with your Silhouette die cutting machine.

Hop on over and check out Jodi's blog post!

So, to go along with the luck of the Irish, why not a pot of gold box?! Now this is kind of a complicated box to assemble. Well the lid at least. I really wanted a thicker lip along the rim of the pot, so I convinced Mike to add that to the design. The only thing is, the space along the rim is tight and you will most definitely need a popsicle stick or similar to be sure your seams are attached. Doesn't make sense right now? Well, read over the tutorial before you start and hopefully it will.

POT 'O GOLD GIFT BOX TUTORIAL
After cutting the pot o' gold box out of cardstock, you should have a group of tabbed strips, a tabbed hexagon and a sun looking shape. The first two make up the base and the sun shape is for the lid.
.

Bend all the sides in towards the good side of paper. For example, if you are using a printed cardstock, bend in toward the side that you will want to show.

We will name the tabs on each "ray" starting from the center to the outside edge.
The tab closest to the center is "A", the next one out is "B" and so on with the furthest from the center being "E".

Bend two tabs up and glue tab A.  Glue all of tab A  (note- If  you glue every other tab it gives time for the last tab to dry while not putting stress on the bond).

Flip upside down.

Fold back the opposite direction.

Align Tab B and glue.  (note- as with before if you glue every other first it is easier to assemble)

After gluing tab B fold down.

Glue Tab C on the inside.  A Popsicle stick works best to hold the tab down.  Use your other hand to push down from the top.

Repeat around until all of tab C is glued.

Glue tab D.  The Popsicle stick works well to apply pressure.  As with above glue every other first for ease of assembly.

Complete the lid by gluing Tab E.

Bend all of the side pieces so that they are all shaped the same.  The Tab should face the right when  facing outward.  Glue each side piece to the center hexagon.  Ensure that al pieces are facing the same way or the tabs will not work.

Once glued, flip over and pull down to form the the basic pot

As with the lid.  Glue tab A (closest to the center). with the tab on the inside.

Glue all of Tab B then glue all of Tab C.

Fill the pot with anything you want.

Apply top.
